This wood has more character than my neighbours! I must dig deeper…
I’m thinking about ‘character’ these days…as in what makes an interesting character?
And whenever I think about ‘character’ I think about my crazy neighbors. Oh, neighbors. Marie-Claire is always telling me how lucky I have to have such fabulous CRAZY neighbors because they are such wonderful fodder for writing. This is true.
But first I have to bitch a bit…then I write.
That is the order.
These particular neighbors are not CRAZY in the ‘SO FUN LOOK AT ALL THE WACKY THINGS THEY DO,’ more the ‘WHO ARE THESE INCREDIBLY SELF-ABSORBED CRAZY PEOPLE? SOOOOO CRAZY THAT THEY DID THAT THING.’ Yes. I’m riled up at my computer. Can you tell?
I think if I knew my neighbors better I could be less scornful. I need to humanize my neighbours, flesh out their characters so to speak. Find out the not so obvious things that make them sweet and human and idiosyncratic.
Currently, what is obvious is that they both care a lot about clothes and Simon and I know what they do for a living because we’ve asked. But they don’t know what we do because they’ve NEVER asked. I’m not bitter. Okay a little bitter. Sigh. But what’s under the pretty clothes? What are the quirks, foibles, fun details that add nuance and depth of character to you, neighbours? Show me your depth!
What books are sitting by your bed? What snacks do you secretly indulge in? What do you talk about on your walks?
I must know, neighbors…’cause I’m in the mood to write.
